Eric Solomon
Wine Importer
As a rock drummer in London in the late 70s, North Carolina native Eric Solomon walked into his local wine bar looking for work and discovered his future vocation was not rock but wine. After studying at the Institute of Masters of Wine, he settled in Manhattan, beginning his new career as a wine importer and talent scout. In 1990, he founded European Cellars, which quickly caught the attention of renowned critics for his off-the-beaten-path selections. For his pioneering efforts, Eric was recognized by Robert Parker as his 2002 Wine Personality of the Year. Food and Wine Magazine awarded him Best Importer of the Year, and he has been a James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional four times. Writing in celebration of European Cellars’ 25th anniversary, Robert Parker remarked, “I first tasted with Eric in 1991/1992, and I have watched him grow as an importer to the point where he may be the finest in the United States.
