June 24, 2020 Champion Trees

High Hampton’s old-growth trees were planted more than 100 years ago. These trees were planted by Dr. William Stewart Halsted during his thirty-year ownership of the property. He also planted the well-known dahlia garden and other exotic flowers, bushes and trees. When he purchased the property, it was approximately 400 acres. Over the years, he acquired land around the area extending it to over 2,000 acres. Lining the lawn at the Inn, you’ll find a large Ginkgo tree, Bottlebrush Buckeye, Bald Cyprus, Copper Beech and America’s largest Frasier Fir. When you are hiking on one of our well-marked trails, you will also come across equally spectacular trees such as Maples, Black Birches, Sourwoods and Yellow Poplars.
