Father and Sons Hiking in the Summer

Summertime in Cashiers calls for long days spent outside soaking up the warm sunshine and fresh air. There’s no better way to capture the true essence of High Hampton than venturing out into the surrounding area to take in the natural landscape. The neighboring Blue Ridge Mountains offer a variety of different hikes for all levels of hikers. Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit, because the cool mountain waters along the trails offer a chance to cool down after a hike through the forest.

If looking for an easy-going adventure the entire family can enjoy, Silver Run Falls, a 25-foot waterfall, is less than a quarter-of-a-mile hike from the trailhead and is mellow enough for swimming in the pool below. The best part about this landmark is that it’s just a five-minute drive from the Inn, allowing for a quick excursion when you find some free time in your day. For a slightly extended but still inviting hike, set out along the 1.7-mile Rainbow Falls Trail to discover three beautiful waterfalls. Hidden Falls and Turtleback Falls each offer breathtaking experiences, but the main attraction along this trail is the jaw-dropping 150-foot Rainbow Falls. As the water plummets down and mist spreads across the pool at the bottom, you can catch a glimpse of vibrant rainbows forming off the falls when the sun hits just right.

For the more experienced explorer seeking a new challenge, venture onto the Yellow Mountain Trail for a challenging 12-mile-round hike. This trail is known to be one of the toughest hikes in the southern region of the United States, so it’s no brisk feat. Be prepared to spend an entire day climbing over 1,000 feet in elevation with steep intervals and deep plunges throughout. Despite the taxing journey, reaching the summit reveals the ultimate reward. A historic fire tower awaits all who conquer this hike, offering an expansive view of the rolling mountain terrain from one of the highest vantage points in the national forest. After a long day of vigorous adventuring, a nourishing meal and cozy accommodation at the Inn awaits your return.
